Gynecologic Oncology
In Germany and other major countries worldwide, Gynecological Oncology an official medical sub-specialty that requires at least 3 extra years of studying after obtaining the Obstetrics-Gynecology qualification. This has to do with performing a vast number of complex diagnostic tests, surgical operations and chemotherapy treatments. Such specialization takes place in large university units, which meet the international criteria set for the training of doctors. This sub-specialty includes the prevention and treatment of uterine, cervical, ovarian, vulvar, vaginal and breast cancer.
Patients should be treated by a Specialist Gynecologist-Oncologist, as this will improve their survival expectancy, the possibility for a complete recovery, as well as reduce any postoperative complications. The treatment of a patient with gynecological cancer does not stop with the tumour-removal operation, but continues with an ongoing treatment scheme and regular post-operation checkups that will allow the early diagnosis of any recurrence.
As a Specialist Gynecologist-Oncologist and director of the Center for Endoscopic and Robotic Surgery at the Schleswig-Holstein University Hospital of Lübeck (UKSH), which is an official ASGO medical specialization center, Georgios Gitas daily faced cases of gynecological cancer, either as a first diagnosis or as a relapse.
